Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices real estate offices pull together for food charity
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties and BHHS Arizona Properties, both part of the Americana Cos., have joined the fight to combat hunger nationwide.
Both companies have become partners with Move For Hunger, a nationwide organization that helps people who are moving donate their nonperishable food to those in need.
Americana Cos., which has large relocation operations in Nevada and Arizona, is the first company of its kind to sign on as a national sponsor with Move For Hunger.
“We are already communicating with thousands of families every year who are moving into or out of their homes,” said Mark Stark, CEO of both companies. “Most don’t know what to do with the food they have in their pantries. If they are moving out of state, it would be boxed up and likely expired by the time they saw it again. This is a great way to help those in need and help homeowners who didn’t want to waste their food.”
Move For Hunger operates in 42 states across the country and was recently recognized at the NBC American Giving Awards with a $125,000 grant from Chase Bank. The organization has partnered with over 338 moving companies in the United States to collect nonperishable food items from people who are moving and deliver the food to local food banks.
“People often think of hunger just during the holiday season. There is a food drive on every corner around Thanksgiving,” said Adam Lowy, Move For Hunger’s executive director. “But it is actually in the summer months when food banks struggle the most. Children are out of school and do not receive the emergency meals they need. With so much moving going on, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties has a huge opportunity to bring relief to those in need.”
Move For Hunger is a nonprofit organization that works with relocation companies to collect nonperishable items from people moving out of their homes and deliver the donations to food banks.
In addition to the Americana Cos.’ support of its efforts, Linda Salkow of Berkshire Hathaway HomeService Arizona Properties serves on the organization’s advisory board of directors. For more information, visit www.moveforhunger.org or call 774-0521.
